In these scenes, the Year 9 chemistry students extracted salt from rock salt (a mixture of sand and salt) using some important separation techniques in chemistry, e.g., filtration and evaporating to dryness or crystallization. First, they added distilled water to the sand and salt mixture. The filtration technique was then used to separate the sand (residue) and salt solution. Finally, the evaporation to dryness or crystallization method was required to obtain the salt from the salt solution.
During this experiment, students also maintained safe laboratory practices and achieved proper experimental skills and precautions, scientific writing and record-keeping, as well as the skill of working in a team. Well done to all Year 9 Chemistry students!
