Friction is a force between two surfaces that are sliding across each other. It always works in the direction opposite to the direction in which the object is moving. Friction always slows down a moving object. The amount of friction depends on the materials from which the two surfaces are made. The rougher the surface, the more friction is produced. In this experiment, a few groups of Year 8 Science students used materials found at our homes to test the effect that different surfaces have on friction.
