VET Retail
General introduction to the subject:
The aim of the vocational program in retail is to provide students with knowledge related to basic retail operations. Retail is the process of making money by selling consumer goods or services to customers through more than one channel. Retailers satisfy demand identified through a supply chain. By the end of the program, students are expected to have gained sufficient skills and should be able to apply their knowledge and skills in a learning environment.
Topics studied:
Unit 1 – Introduction to Retail, Sales and Customer Care
Unit 2 – Dealing with stock and visual merchandising
Unit 3 – Key aspects of retail operations
Class activities involved:
Group activities and individual work, discussions, and hands-on activities. Students gain basic skills in retailing, including communication and customer care. Students will be able to put their knowledge of how to store and show off goods to use in a market and dresswear setting.
Homework assigned:
2 assignments per year, together with research projects and preparatory and consolidation work.
Assessment given:
Students will complete three units over the course of three years, one unit during each scholastic year.
During the year, each unit is assessed by means of
• two (2) assignments (60% of the yearly mark) that consist of both written and practical tasks
• one (1) assessment (40% of the yearly mark and issued by MATSEC) that consist of a written examination
The marks obtained during years 9, 10 and 11 will amount to 100% of the final Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) result.

Retail is the process of selling consumer goods or services to customers through multiple channels of distribution to earn a profit. Retailers satisfy demand identified through a supply chain. By the end of the programme, students are expected to have gained sufficient skills and should be able to apply knowledge and skills in a learning environment. A lot of emphasis is placed on practical, hands-on work in real live scenarios created in the school.

Unit 1 – Applied Retail Support
Unit 2 – Practical Merchandising
Unit 3 – Retail Front Line
Class activities involved:
Group activities and individual work, discussions and hands-on activities. Students gain basic skills in retailing together with communication and customer care. Students will have the opportunity to practice in a market and dresswear environment, applying practices of goods storage and display.
Homework assigned:
2 assignments per year, together with research projects and preparatory and consolidation work.
Assessment given:
During each scholastic year, students will cover a unit.
Throughout the three years, students complete 3 units, one each year.
During the year, each unit is assessed by means of three (3) assignments that are mainly based on practical tasks and carried out in class.
Out of the 3 assignments each year, one is issued by MATSEC.
The marks obtained during years 9, 10 and 11 will amount to 100% of the final Secondary Education Applied Certificate (SEAC) result.
