VET Hair Dressing and Beauty

General introduction to the subject:
Hairdressing and beauty students will learn the basics of understanding the impact of personal presentation, knowledge of health and safety in the salon, and good communication skills. Students will also learn about the structure of hair and skin diseases, as well as how to perform a shampooing and conditioning treatment. They will also perform a basic one length haircut and a manicure and pedicure treatment. The subject will help students further their studies in this area.

Topics studied:
Unit 1 – Communication and Consultation
Unit 2 – Shampooing, Conditioning and Face Treatments
Unit 3 – Hairstyles and Nail Treatments

Class activities involved:
Class lessons will include discussions, research work, and practical training on mannequin heads. They will also perform hair and beauty treatments on real models.

Homework assigned:
Homework is aimed at completing assignments. Other tasks will include a portfolio, research work, and practical assignments on mannequin heads.

Assessment given:
Students will complete three units over the course of three years, one unit during each scholastic year.
During the year, each unit is assessed by means of
• two (2) assignments (60% of the yearly mark) that consist of both written and practical tasks
• one (1) assessment (40% of the yearly mark and issued by MATSEC) that consist of a written examination
The marks obtained during years 9, 10, and 11 will amount to 100% of the final Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) result.

Applied Hair Dressing and Beauty

General introduction to the subject:
Students taking the applied route will acquire skills that will give them an overview of the Hair & Beauty industry. They will learn how to communicate with clients and colleagues and basic Health and Safety measures. Students will also learn how to perform simple tasks on hair, face and nails. This will help them in furthering their studies in the hair and beauty sector.

Topics studied:
Unit 1 – Basic Hair and Beauty Services
Unit 2 – Hair Styling and Face Care
Unit 3 – Haircuts and Nail Care

Class activities involved:
Lessons include practical training on mannequin heads, discussions, role play and research work.

Homework assigned:
Homework will include practical tasks on mannequin heads, completing assignments and a portfolio.

Assessment given:
During each scholastic year, students will cover a unit.
Throughout the three years, students complete 3 units, one each year.
During the year, each unit is assessed by means of three (3) assignments that are mainly based on practical tasks and carried out in class.
Out of the 3 assignments each year, one is issued by MATSEC.
The marks obtained during years 9, 10 and 11 will amount to 100% of the final Secondary Education Applied Certificate (SEAC) result.
