Fieldwork at Buskett

On 26th October, students from 8 Coral and 8 Diamond went on fieldwork at Buskett. They observed different Maltese habitats, such as garigue and woodland. In the garigue they tried to identify the type of plants present and their distribution. Since the weather has been very dry lately, they learnt which type of plants are well adapted for these conditions. They looked under stones in order to observe the variation of small animals present.

At Buskett they observed different kind of trees and their leaves. They did leaf and bark rubbing of the trees. Soil samples were also collected from this area and the soil’s pH was tested at school using different methods such as litmus paper, pH paper, adding vinegar and adding bicarbonate of soda.

Students observed both good and bad human impacts. They had first-hand experience of the natural environment, and they understood better the importance of the conservation of the natural habitats.
