Probability by Experiment

Last week, Year 10 students investigated probability by completing the Bottle Flip Challenge experiment.

The students were divided into small groups and had to flip a bottle filled with water at least 30 times. They had to write whether the bottle landed upright, sideways, or on it’s cap using a tally chart. In theory, each result is 1/3, but in reality, it was quite different since the bottle came sideways most of the time. Then we discussed the reasons why the bottle landed most of the time on its side, less likely upright, and very unlikely on its cap.
