During January, our Year 8 students had an exciting opportunity to explore Malta’s rich maritime history in their history lessons, thanks to a special visit from the Underwater Cultural Heritage Malta unit. The team shared insights into their fascinating work, showcasing priceless underwater archaeological discoveries from the Maltese archipelago. One of the most remarkable finds discussed was the Phoenician shipwreck off Gozo’s coast, one of only seven in the world, offering invaluable insights into Malta’s ancient past.
To make these discoveries even more immersive, students experienced them firsthand through a 360-degree virtual reality (VR) simulation, bringing the underwater world to life. This engaging experience not only deepened their understanding of Malta’s maritime heritage but also introduced them to an exciting career path—Maritime Archaeology—highlighting how studying history can open doors to unique professions.
A big thank you to Julia Zerafa and her team from Heritage Malta for these interesting sessions. Thanks also to Ms. Graziella Busuttil, history teacher, for sharing!
